Wild Orchid (Shawna's Favorite New Band)

by: Shawna Kenny

For as long as I can remember, Kids Incorporated has been my favorite show. When they took it off the air I was devastated! Now Wild Orchid is my salvation! When I first heard their song "At Night I Pray", If freaked! I couldn't believe my favorite girls were back in the scene. Stacy was always my favorite Kids Inc. cast member and I grew up wishing that I could meet her and others someday. I still haven't been able to meet any of them, but I can't wait for Wild Orchid to go on tour so I can see them!
Not really, I just ripped that from one of Wild Orchid's scary dedicated fan-sites on the web. The group's 3rd album, "Oxygen", is out now, and right now they're touring with N'Sync. Stacy, Stefanie, and Renee all took a few minutes out form clothes-shopping before tour to talk to me (are you jealous?) and answered some of the burning questions that we here at While You Were Sleeping had for them. Read on-you may become a Wild Orchid groupie yourself.

Can you all play any instruments?

Stefanie: Stacy and Renee play piano a little bit and I've dabbed in the guitar, but none of us are, you know...you need to be dedicated and we're so busy writing and on the road that...maybe someday. Every year my New Year's Resolution is to pick up my guitar and really study, and it happens for a month and then...you know.

How do you all stay in such great shape?

Stefanie: Well, the one good thing about being on the road is that we're constantly on the go, and we dance on-stage so that helps a lot, but it's hard when your on tour, you eat a lot of fast food. Any chance we get we love to go to the gym, run, take dance classes, and we're all sort of getting into lifting light weights a little bit for our arms.

How was the photo shoot? Do you like firemen?

Stacy: My uncle's a firemen so it was a little, uh, close to home. We were just embarrassed because we're in a park in those outfits and everyone's staring at us and they're offering us money for "professional favors".

So they thought you were prostitutes?

Stacy: Oh yeah, they were real interested in us. I've never had a fireman so interested in me in my life. It must've been the red lipstick.

Do you remember your first kiss?

Stefanie: My first kiss wasn't a French kiss. It was in third grade and we were doing these art projects, and I went under the table to pick up my art scraps, and the this kid Craig went under the table and kissed me! it wasn't any tongue or anything but that was my first kiss. Stacy: Oh yeah, are you kidding? It was at the wrap-party for Kids Inc. and he was my boyfriend I the show and I had had a crush on him for 3 years. He played Ryan on the show, he was the "cool" guy. And we were kind of flirting the whole season. It was the wrap party and he gave me this card, and he knew it was my first kiss and he made it so wonderful for me. Like out of a fairy-tale. And then we didn't talk for a whole after that. But it was fine. It was nice.

How do you feel about plastic surgery?

Stefanie: I think it's a really personal thing. I don't really agree with really young people doing it, but I'll probably get a face-lift when I'm 40 or 50. I mean, I think it's really hard being I this business, I think that young girls can get the wrong kind of image from that. I don't advocate it, but if there's something you want to change abut yourself and it'll make you feel better abut yourself and you're doing it for the right reasons, not to make a boyfriend like you better, if you're doing it for you, then I'm all for it. Stacey: I have no problem with it. Everything in moderation is my motto. Now whether I live by it or not is..I mean, definitely, I'll get my eyes done when I'm 40. Heck, yeah!

What's the worst job you've ever had?

Stefanie: I was really lucky. I started this work at a young age, so I've always had really cool jobs, but I guess when I did commercials I had to eat, like, the gross granola bar or I had a lot of kissing, and that was a little embarrassing.

I just wrote a book called "I Was a Teenage Dominatrix," (shameless plug) and was wondering if you would ever consider being a dominatrix?

Stefanie: In my private life I'm definitely a dominatrix, I'm all for that! Stacy: Oh definitely! Last year for Halloween my best friend Bobbi, she's an editor for a teen magazine, she and I dressed up as bondage-twins! And we had a 15-foot chain connecting us all through the whole Playboy mansion. And we could trap people in our chain and make them do whatever we wanted. We had whips, handcuffs. It was great until she started getting sick and I was connected to her and we had to go where she could upchuck.

Were there any orgies when you were at the Playboy mansion?

Stacy: I didn't see any. There weren't any orgies from what I could tell but there was definitely nakedness going on in the grotto area. If you wanna see a show, go in there.

So was Wild Orchid naked?

Stacy: Oh no! No, no, no. Oh no. I was in a skin-tight dress, but not naked.

Do you think that N'SYNC is gay?

Stefanie: No. I definitely know they're not. I've known some of the girls they've dated and I know they love women!
