Phyn KSN
Interview by: GuerillaOne
Q- What do you write?
PHYN
Q- What crew(s) do you represent?
thee KINGS STOP AT NOTHING KSN) crew.
Q- When did you start painting? Do you still paint?
In 1983 i used to go down to the wash near my house, and spray paint 'iron maiden' and 'upside down crosses' and 666, then black flag signs, and eventually by 85 or so i was a toy trying to do bubble letters with radio's and b-boys and buildings on top of the letters writing "fresh" and "break" and stuff like that. As far as writing "phyn" that was late 86 through 93.
Q- Why did you start?
Breakdancing got me into graff art. Some of the first graffiti art i ever saw was in the back of the radiotron & venice beach, which were good breaking spots. a little later on i would go look at the pan pacific and the RTA/LTS yard and drool. at that point(86) i knew i wanted to do graff.
Q- Talk about ksn a little:
It was started in 85 by rev, rise, dread, sire. i got in a little later. we were family. we kicked it everyday. rev and grave were in a punk band called excel. we were all into punk. we were into rap too, but we were the first crew to do skulls and that type of stuff. something other than the traditional b-boy type stuff.
Q- Did ksn ever battle wca?
When i first got in, we battled in the l.a. river near atwater. there was about 15 of us and about 40 wca dudes. cops saw 50 kids in the wash and thought we were having a gang fight and raided it. people were jumping in the river, running up onto the freeway. a few wca's got caught, but none of us did. they thought we set them up, since we picked the spot(which of course wasnt true). peno from wca went awol from the navy supposedly just to battle. im not sure what there peice was gonna say but, we were doing a peice that said 'dark side of the moon' with wizards and snakes and a devil. we wound up doing a collaboration piece at our yard on sun/fax. so it was never determined who was better. rise and risk were supposed to battle also, but it never happenned.
Q- Do you like the new styles out there?
Don't follow graff anymore, but i chill with awr/msk. i think they've taken graff to new heights. they put in more work than any crew ive ever seen...even the old days.
Q- Who were your influences?
Crime, prime, eaz, soon, miner, rival, dream, rev, rise, relm, sane, siner, riot, mark7, when zephyr, sharp & brim came out from n.y. and bombed venice, all the tags i thought looked cool back in the day, gangwriting, when people wrote band names, punk flyers, the 'lost angeles' guy, revolutionary writing, my city, when non graff-writers write stuff on walls, l.a. bomb squad, uca, dtk, k2s, ksn, smd, ooca, lts, rta.
Q- What does the future have in store for graffiti?
There is no future in graffiti, thats why I quit. jk
Q- Anything else to add?
